This is what happened to me.
I was on my way on the Sunday morning to church with my wife. Driving down the fly over, the car in front suddenly stopped. He had to stop since a basket of chickens had fallen off from the vehicle in front. I managed to bring my car to a halt without hitting him. But it was not the case with the car behind me, driven by a youngster who claimed that he was a “professional” driver ( whatever that means). This car behind hit my car so violently that it broke the sturdy rear bumper and damaged the dickey of my car. It also pushed my car forward that it bumped into the car in front damaging the front of my car as well. The driver of the car in front realized that there was a multiple collision and may be he knew how the cops will act. He drove off. There was also another car involved in the collision which dashed into the car behind me. The collision was so hard that he broke even his wind shield.
Now the fun starts. The two drivers started to abuse me saying that I am responsible for the accident by braking….not they who couldn’t control their vehicles and were speeding. One of them even snatched off my car key. The driver of the second car ran off and came back with a police party in a patrol car. The “big chief” sat in the car and sent his assistants to check. The eye witnesses around explained to the assistants how the accident happened. But the police did not believe them and did not even look around at the accident site. Apparently they knew what to do. We were all asked to come to the police station. My frightened wife refused to move out of the car; I had to forcefully put her in an auto and sent her home.
At the police station the two drivers, the passengers in the second car( who were some political bigwigs) and the relatives of the boy all wanted me to challanned for causing the accident and pay for the damages. My feeble protests had no value. It was all pre decided… I was the culprit and I must pay the price. I was challanned under section 184 for dangerous driving and was asked to pay the fine. I paid since otherwise I was told that I will have to go to the court and spent the time there. My complaint was not registered; the complaint of the boy who hit me was registered. Adding insult to injury the other two drivers were sent off scot free.
The note on the challan says “ the driver stopped the car by sudden break!!!!”. It is news to me…. Braking is dangerous driving according to Hyderabad Police.
The moral of the story…. Don’t brake…. Kill the guy in front…or get challanned by Hyderabad Police. Choice is yours.
Ps. On the same day on the police website I left a message asking them to advise me on the matter. I am yet to hear from them after a week.
